with something. In many cases, the characters are blocked and must overcome this internal and external blocking agent before they can attain any kind of goal or success.
Conflict drives the plot and adds dimension to the character. In Notting Hill, a screenplay by Curtis Richard, there is plenty of both internal
and external conflicts/blocking agents. Notting Hill is a movie about the unlikely romance which blooms between a movie star and a bookstore owner. Sounds implausible, but that is why there
is conflict and blocking which happens almost immediately. In fact, the two lovers meet when a bookseller, played by Hugh Grant, inadvertently
spills orange juice down Julia Roberts shirt. Feeling terrible about the incident, Grant invites Roberts up to his apartment so he can clean her up. One thing leads to another
and they become involved. Problem is: shes famous, hes not. And thats only the beginning of their problems.
The basic structure of most fiction stories follows a simple Act one, Act Two, Act Three kind of format. In the first part of the movie, or Act one, the
protagonists are introduced and their main goals stated. Interestingly enough, both Anna Scott(Julia Roberts) and William Thacker (Hugh Grant) want the same thing: true love.
