issue of health coverage for military personnel and their families isnt quite as headline-grabbing, the consequences of increasing benefits and premiums tied in with red tape and staff that stays
the same size puts as much of a stain of the countrys treatment of its military men and women as did the Walter Reed scandal.
In this paper, well examine one of the voluntary medical plans available to the military, called TRICARE. Well examine the reason behind and formation of TRICARE
and determine if, indeed, the program is performing to its mission capabilities. TRICARE and its Mission TRICARE is the civilian care
component of the U.S.s Military Health System. The program is operated under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. The plan, which is a voluntary one,
is available to military personnel, military retirees and some members of the Military Reserve. Other beneficiaries are dependents of military personnel. An outgrowth of the 1956 Dependents Medical Care Act
allowing the Department of Defense to provide civilian health care to dependents of military service members, TRICARE today has different options. TRICARE
Standard allows beneficiaries to use any civilian health care provider that adheres to TRICARE regulations. Beneficiaries of TRICARE Extra can use a civilian health care provider within a regional contractors
provider network. TRICARE Prime is the plans Health Maintenance Organization plan. The TRICARE Reserve Select, or TRS, is geared toward National Guard and Reservists.
