Even when the agrarian economy gave way to the industrial age, leadership methods didnt change a whole lot. Most leaders of corporations assumed their employees (the vast portion of whom was undereducated), really had no capacity to understand all but the most basic of instructions. But beginning during the middle of the 20th century, we began moving from a primarily manufacturing/production economy into a knowledge/service economy, meaning that leadership styles needed to be changed. It should probably come as no surprise that around this time, new styles of leadership and theories began to emerge. Although they differed, they pretty much had one thing in common - the successful leader couldnt just stand there and give orders any more. In order to get his workforce to produce effectively as a team, the leader had to recognize that the typical environment would have many variables, and these variables meant differing leadership styles. In the book Inspiring Leadership, J. Carnwell-Ward and his colleagues go to great lengths to outline the basis of true leaders and what attributes these men and women have to lead a corporation (or other agency). In one chapter, Chapter 5, the authors analyze a study that was conducted during a long-term boating/yacht race that took these yachts into some treacherous situations. The study assessed which leadership qualities got the crew through the dangerous environment, and which crews were most successful at doing so.
