a job between nine and five and, at the end of the day, would go home. After about 40 years of this, employees could expect to retire, with a gold
watch and a pat on the back. At least, the male employees could. The female employees tended to get married, with most of their work at home.
With technology and globalization, however, employee management - known these days as human resources - has changed drastically. Standard work hours of nine to five
are no longer a factor of work. Many businesses operate 24/7. Furthermore, roles of employees have changed as the workforce has become more diverse. Technology has also drastically changed the
skill set of employees. Whereas a century ago, a well-qualified employee could aspire to rise to the level of managing an assembly line, these days, a quailed employee can become
a CEO. Knowledge has replaced industry as the product of demand. The paragraph above is a general statement about the world-wide workforce,
a flexible workforce that works smart, productively, and with the idea of contributing to a companys bottom line. But is this statement true about countries on an individual basis?
The answer is: No. If we study a country like Ireland, well find out that the current employment trends and their impact on
the workforce is far different than that impacting, say, the United States. In studying the literature available about HR trends in Ireland that the authors of studies are investigating and
