These days, however, any organization worth its while needs to switch that personnel department to a human resources department; more specifically, human resources should focus more on
human resources management. Such a department, with trained and capable individuals, can help the company in a variety of areas, from performance management, to decreasing turnover, to ensuring productivity by
developing systems that help with continual feedback. One area that is important with todays HRM focus is that of employee safety, health management
and well-being. Certainly were beyond the days in which employees are in active danger in their jobs (except in a few rare cases). But other safety issues exist, which has
given rise to a whole new area known as "ergonomics." A poorly designed office chair, for example, could exert strain on an employees back, which could lead to increased absenteeism
and higher health insurance costs as the employee seeks out ways to reduce the pain. Even if employees dont have backaches (or repetitive stress syndrome from all-day stints at computer
keyboards), employees breathing "stale air" indoors could suffer a range of respiratory issues - again, leading to an increase in sick days and health care expenses.
Turnover is another challenge and issue that human resource managers are facing. According to a recent study conducted in the hospitality industry, high staff turnover can
