a place of low morale to a place where workers want to come and are glad to work. This is the case of Treadway Tires Lima, OH plant. The case
study in question, by Skinner and Beckham (2008) gives a classic example of how the stresses of lower management can lead to a morale problem impacting an entire organization.
Treadway has been seeing consistent turnover of its line foremen staff, and for good reason. On the one hand, these folks are responsible for
staffing production lines of unionized workers for 12 hour shifts; a daunting task. On the other hand, the line foremen are required to meet what might seem unrealistic goals set
by management for production. When the goals arent met, management gets testy. And when management gets testy, it takes it out on the foremen, who, in turn, take it out
on the line workers. This, in turn, leads to low morale on the line workers part. But the difference here is that the line workers have the union - meaning
any disciplinary action comes from the union. Many times, the union does nothing. So the foremen are frustrated once again. As a result,
line foremen at Treadway Tires Lima plant are not a very happy group. Theyre under consistent pressure to ensure their people perform, and when they dont perform, theyre the ones
to blame from management. Theyre also resented by the line employees, who believe the foremen arent being very fair or understanding. Given the pressure cooker these men (and women) are
