recession took a toll on one of the investing partners, and the remaining two dont have much more capital to contribute. Nor do the others want to bring more partners
into the mix. Aside from scaling back expenses, the partners have agreed to outsource some of the components of putting together this
magazine. To make this make any kind of sense, however, the partners must be willing to outsource at least five components of the publication - and explain, from a financial
point of view, why something like this makes sense. Components of Magazine Publishing Before determining what, exactly, needs to be outsourced,
its first a good idea to understand what, precisely, goes into magazine publishing. On the surface, there doesnt seem to be a lot - simply pull content together, slap it
on a page (via either a printing press or printer) and voila! The magazine is created. However, in his excellent article about starting a magazine, Tom Pearson notes that "to
do it right, magazine publishing is less a one-person operation . . . there are more hats to wear" (1999). Okay, sure, the response might be. Someone certainly has to
write the articles and they have to be laid out on the page and printed. And oh yes, probably someone to answer the phones. How much more needs to be
done? According to Pearson, a lot. Submissions need to be answered (which is a lot of work in and of itself). Subscriptions need
to be fulfilled, with renewals mailed out in a timely fashion. Speaking of fulfillment, the magazines themselves have to be mailed, or sent to newsstands, so theres a distribution issue
