crimes, and then to explain the differences. Its true that there are a lot of transnational crimes that fit into the international crime definition. But there are some subtle differences between the two types of crimes. We consider transnational crimes as those occurring in one country, but impacting another. Good examples of such crimes include human and drug trafficking and smuggling. The other thing we can say about transactional crimes is that they are often (though not always) motivated by financial gain. The article selected to detail transnational crime involves the U.S.-Mexico border war, especially in Juarez, Mexico. A little more than a year ago, a U.S. consulate employee and his pregnant wife were shot in their SUV in Juarez (Whitney, 2010). The article has pointed out that, while violence is rife in Juarez, its impacting the United States as well - the violence, for the most part, is over drugs and drug distribution (Whitney, 2010). It impacts the United States, not only because citizens entering Juarez stand to be killed, but because these drugs are coming over the border into El Paso. Nor is El Paso-Juarez the only point of entry with all these drugs. Juarez happens to be making news in recent years because, as author Mike Whitney points out, its known as the murder capital of the western hemisphere. The U.S. is trying to help Mexico stem this drug war, but with little effect.
