Tariffs exist to try to make a good less desirable - and quotas exist to restrict the flow of goods and services. Meanwhile, corrupt trade practices also can prevent a free flow of trade between nations. This is especially true when it comes to least developed nations. The theory goes that globalization - in other words, a world without borders that doesnt restrict the free flow of capital or goods across countries - should benefit everyone equally, from the powerhouse western nations to the poorer, slowly developing Third World nations. The truth, however, is that this is not the case. Because of quotas and tariffs both on imports and exports, LCDs dont realize the economic welfare that their more developed cousins might. In addition, corrupt trade practices (such as bribery and theft) tend to end up further downplaying the economic welfare that poorer countries can obtain through trade. In this paper, well examine several things. First well determine whether tariff or quotas tend to be more beneficial for a least developed country, and why this is the case. Then well examine the problems of corruption in trade. Though we used China as an example (namely because China has been in the news so often lately), the Peoples Republic of China is not the only one suffering from trade corruption problems.
