student had opportunity to be the houseguest of a Clemson University professor of management and to gain his thoughts on the current status of Total Quality Management (TQM) and its
continued applicability in todays highly competitive business environment. It is that individuals view that TQM always has been directly applicable - before it had a name and certainly in
todays competitive business climate. Though TQM seemed to fall out of favor for a time as a fad that had run its course, the more basic problem was that
we lacked sufficient measurement tools (Fredendall, 2005). As those tools recently have been emerging, TQM once again has found favor as a named concept.
Originating in manufacturing, of course TQM has found its way into all aspects of business over the years. Not only is healthcare not immune, it particularly benefits
from the precepts of TQM. There are several points particularly suited to healthcare. Decisions are based on data TQM does not specifically
combine qualitative and quantitative approaches to assessing conditions that exist at any given time. More than a decade ago, Bigelow and Arndt (1995) suspected value in TQM in the
hospital setting but wrote, "The lack of empirical research fails to provide support to claims that TQM reconciles trade-offs between cost and quality, increases customer satisfaction and enhances hospitals competitiveness
and performance" (p. 15). This is the situation Dr. Fredendall (2005) alluded to in his observation that it has been only in the past several years that researchers were
