the primary approach was called by many different names, the process that evolved in the management of American manufacturing companies was eventually termed Total Quality Management (TQM). Though it
was formerly known by several names, the object was both stationary and "crystal clear: Improve or Perish - and Do it FAST!" (atlas.faytech.cc). Leaner, more productive organizations were
the result of the shift of focus from profit only to high quality produced in the most efficient way possible, letting profits follow in the wake. TQMs History and Evolution
Though perhaps overstated, Systma declares that "The concept of quality has been with us since the beginning of time." He does point out that God stood back from His
creation and called it "good," however, so perhaps Systmas opinion is not overstated, after all. In terms of present-day production methods, however, he states that quality in itself only became
an issue with the advent of mass production, when reproducibility of the exact size and shape of component parts affected the overall quality of the resulting product. Since many
people had a hand in the production of one finished product, it was imperative that each of those performed at peak levels, both in quality of work and in the
speed at which they worked (Systma). The first published work dedicated to the continuous improvement of statistical process control (SPC) was released in 1931. Economic Control of Quality of
Manufactured Product (Van Nostrand, 1931), authored by Walter A. Shewhart, became the foundation for modern SPC. W. Edwards Deming, considered the "father" of modern-day TQM, was Shewharts prot?g? (Systma).
Both Shewhart and Deming were involved in fine-tuning American manufacturing processes to supply the needs of World War II, and were later sent to Japan to aid in the reconstruction
