The type of person that might be drawn to vacation in Florence, Italy, for example, may not be the same type of person that chooses to vacation in St. Petersburg.
Do tourists seek out a particular social structure or culture in which to vacation, or is a persons choice based on something else? It can be said that any place
has the surface or veneer that it shows to the world, but that there is a deeper context in which a place may be experienced as well. In Florence, Italy,
for example, many people vacation there because it has immense historical interest and atmosphere. Many go there because the of the tradition of supporting and making important cultural events such
as the theater and the arts. Italy, especially, has the additional history of housing some of the worlds greatest masterpieces and having produced some of the worlds greatest artists.
Secondly, the family life in Florence is different than it might be in other countries. For one thing, the ordinary work day is situated around a siesta and everyone makes
time for conversation. It is considered rude not to be social with family and friends during the day, even while one is at work. Since the siesta is generally a
few hours in the afternoon, most business people go home during that time, and it is during this time that most Italians reconnect with their family. Or, some of the
younger professionals spend their siesta time together in local places of historical or artistic interest, or perhaps spend time in a small bistro. The tourist who might embrace these sorts
of lifestyle differences may not be the type of person who might enjoy St. Petersburg, though, in truth, both spots make an ideal escape from the rat race of daily
