reward, motivate and retain employees. Unlike the "work till you drop" motto employed by many factory owners in the late 19th century, late 20th century and early 21st century theorists
came up with a pretty simplistic notion: Namely that people tend to work better, harder and faster if theyre rewarded property for their efforts.
Despite the fact that the notion of reward for work (beyond a paycheck) is a simple one, trying to figure out what rewards will work the best is
a complex one. An Internet search of "compensation and rewards" yields thousands of articles on the topic, from boosting salaries to non-tangible compensation such as increased health care, comp time
and days off. One difficulty was that, when the concept was first introduced, the practice of compensation and benefits were based
on formulas and assumptions that were a "one-size-fits-all" mentality (World at Work, 2006). During those early days, one size did fit all -- "all" being primarily a white male, either
single or married, who might (or might not) be supporting a family at home. The compensation needs were simple: Provide a salary with bonuses, possible health care, and a retirement
pension at the end of the career so that the breadwinner could continue taking care of his family. During the latter part
of the 20th century, with the entrance into the workforce of women, moms and part-timers, as well as the emergence of a global economy, its been recognized that compensation and
benefits structures need to change with the workforce in order to attract, retain and reward employees (World at Work, 2006). Some companies
