traveling across the newly formed country called America he was so captivated at the young countrys achievements that he would write a dissertation (in two volumes) which are still considered
to be one of the most definitive observations about early America and the spirit of Democracy. His motive, among others, was to determine why America of all places was able
to make democracy work for them. What was it that the Americans were doing that could be taken back to his homeland of France? Tocqueville answered his questions and
in return offered his predictions for democracy in the future of the new United States. Interestingly, his thoughts in volumes one and two, for the most part, continue his same
themes, though they differ from one another enough to prompt a closer look. In Volume one it is evident that Tocqueville is a highly devout and religious person. His all

Indians as other writers would later do. Instead he makes the astute observation that while the Indians may be poor and ignorant they are nonetheless free from the societal pressures
of the lower classes in civilized countries. This, then, is one of the central themes to Volume one, which is the nature of equality and its relation to political freedom.
For example, he theorizes that freedom could become in danger of being lost if there is an overly aggressive and focused pursuit of equality. This is a remarkable statement given
that modern America, in the last half of the last century, prided itself on the pursuit of complete equality. Yet, he is stating that democracy suffers when this is done.
