is singing. As such, the mockingbird becomes a central implied metaphor and unifying image throughout the novel. Metaphorically speaking, killing a Mocking bird
is exactly what happens throughout the book. The mocking bird is explained to be an innocent bird, whose only joy is singing. That is why it is a sin to
kill something that means no harm. Symbolically, though, the mocking bird is killed when racism begins to infiltrate the town and it becomes evident that the entrenched prejudices are not
as far away or long forgotten as they would like to believe. The mocking bird is also tragically slain again in the story involving Scout and Jems rite of passage
into adulthood, impaling the innocence of their childhood on the ugliness of racism. Once innocent of evil, they enter life thinking that everyone is basically good, but then, as they
mature, discover that evil is inherent in the nature of mankind. The threats which come to those characters in the novel who
seem to represent the mocking bird are the threats of hatred, prejudice and ignorance. Innocent people such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are so innocent that they are not
able to deal with evil when it comes and as a result they are destroyed by it. What is interesting, though, is the way in which each of the two
