II. POLICE AND THE ABORIGINES The relationship between police and the public in most global communities is tenuous at best; that racial minorities are in constant battle with white
police speaks to the wholly imbalanced system of law enforcement and the perpetuation of stereotypes. The rapport between Australias police force and the indigenous Aborigines is about as hostile
as these relationships go, inasmuch as the level of racist stereotypes has taken on a life of its own throughout the legal system (McGillion, 1991). Hickey did not die from
a blow to his head by an officers billy club, nor did his death result from a gunshot wound fired from cops gun; rather, he was "catapulted from his bicycle
over the handlebars, becoming impaled on the metal picket fence" (Abernethy, 2004), illustrating just how out of control the racial problem has become between police and Aborigines when they can
die at the hands of law enforcement without ever having been physically touched. This indirect responsibility for the teenaged Hickeys death has cast even greater scorn upon the New
