a young man seemed to grant him a perspective on the war from both the standpoint of a young man and an idealist, and from the standpoint of a writer. What he apparently experienced there affected the way he and a whole generation perceived life, love and the American pursuit of happiness. In his book, The Things They Carried, this influence and perspective are most evident. The Things They Carried is unique in that it has no discernable beginning and no discernable ending, just like the war. It is written in a style that makes the reader feel as if he or she is sitting in some small caf? and OBrien is telling you his personal recollection of his time in Vietnam. One of the very first elements is the idea of a person carrying things, as the title suggests. As the title suggests, there is the obvious carrying of a pack by the soldier, but less obvious, he seems to be stating is the burden of war that each man carried with him. OBrien seems to describe with great detail the weight of every item various soldiers are carrying, such as the jackets, the M-16s, and other various gear. Each soldiers gear varies to some extent as does his or her own emotional baggage. Some of that baggage inevitably includes fear, guilt, homesickness, anger, and that struggle between the sanctity of life and survival. OBrien mentions that most of the guys there called their life in America the real world which suggests that their time there seemed unreal to them, as if they were all caught in some large collective nightmare.
