                                                    the title of peacemaker should apply to Roosevelt, and yet, a peacemaker is one who finds non-violent means (such as negotiation and compromise) to solve a potentially volatile situation. Given  
                                                
                                                    this criterion, then, Roosevelt more than deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. 	 Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for his work with the Russo-Japanese War, Roosevelt was the first  
                                                
                                                    American to receive the prize in any of the categories. More astonishing still was the fact that he declined the monetary award that accompanied the honor(eHistory 2003). He stated that  
                                                
                                                    accepting the money would be like taking money for saving a drowning man(Marks 1979). Instead, he stated that the money would be turned over to the US Treasury to be  
                                                
                                                    used for the cause of furthering industrial peace in the United States.  	But why, of all the nations of the world, did the United States step forward to mediate  
                                                
                                                    between Russia and Japan? One of the greatest reasons was because the United States had a vested interest in opening up the Asian market for trade. At this point in  
                                                
                                                    time, the United States and Russia were allies and a problem with Japan would disrupt American plans for trade with Asia. Therefore, the motivation was to solve the problem as
