fallen into the last category. As he proved with his controversial work, Sister Carrie, and continues in his work, The Bulwark, life has a harsh reality to it and it
can only be addressed and righted when exposed for examination. Unfortunately for Dreiser, he would not live to see the publication of the Bulwark. Two years after his death the
books message of liberation and the lack of social fortitude would continue in his stead to insist that the public take note of its dirty little secrets and seek to
do the right thing. The Bulwark is a search for self, but in the greater sense of the word it is a search for humanity. During the time in
which he wrote this novel the industrial revolution had been in full swing as well as several World Wars. The innocence of a nation had been shattered and it had
shaken belief systems to the core. Americas changing role in the global arena was also shifting Americans perspective and how they viewed themselves as individuals. It was Dreisers contention that
the role of the poet and the writer at this time was to aid those who were searching, on their personal journey. And, in doing so, he answered his own
internal and spiritual questions about mankinds purpose. Though the truth is reported to set one free, as a writer writing about the truth can sometimes get ones books banned. This
may have been the reason that he continued to set aside The Bulwark as he worked on other projects, convinced that the struggles that he had to endure with Sister
Carrie would be nothing compared to the backlash he and his family might incur when The Bulwark came out. This would seem to contradict his earlier bulldog mentality as a
