to primal instincts and the underlying power and savagery of nature. In his book, The Secret Agent, however, his themes trend more toward irony and as such explore various themes,
including the them of time. "Mr. Verloc cared nothing for Stevies excitement, but he felt horribly wakeful, and dreaded facing the darkness and silence that would follow the extinguishing of
the lamp"(Conrad 61). This passage shows the use of darkness as a symbol and also is used as a bit of irony. The secret agent, Mr.
Verloc, in fact, is afraid of the dark. Just in this passage alone there are several representations. The extinguishing of the lamp is symbolic for the extinguishing of safety and
security, even illumination. The mention of silence also shows that with darkness comes an aloneness or an alienation from others. Mr. Verloc, by virtue of his occupation must face these
things many times. Yet, he is not used to them, nor does he welcome them. Another irony is that Mr. Verloc, the secret agent, is anything but a hero. He
is not the swashbuckling James Bond type. Rather, he is nearly despicable. Then, Verlocs world is rocked when his new boss actually wants to see some action taken against the
radicals that Verloc has been spying upon. Now, time is not his friend. The element of time is narrowed considerably after this point for the novel. Whereas the beginning
of the novel spans a far wider amount of time, from the point that he is urged to take action or be fired, his desperation begins to mount and the
