a mystery and more a driving force which compels each character forward toward its tragic end. The themes of death come in many guises in this work, both literal and
figurative. In the beginning of the play death makes its entrance in the form of a military accomplishment. Othello has been made king because of his ability to defeat
the enemy on the battlefield. In other words, he has dispensed death to other men and in doing so has been elevated to the rank of King. Ironically, it will
be the same use of death, his killing of Desdemona, that eventually becomes his undoing. Therefore, Death, was both a maker and the destroyer of a King.
Likewise, it is suggested that someone so surrounded by the stench of death is not capable of experiencing love in its fullest intent. This is
exampled in Act one when Othello states that "the tyrant custom ... / Hath made the flinty and steel couch of war / My thrice-driven bed of down,(Shakespeare, Act I,
sc iii, li. 227-229, Bradley 175). His love of war has not taught him of love or its finer points, and yet he fully acknowledges the fact that it is
his prowess as a warrior that has drawn Desdemona to him. When his loss of battles to fight on the actual battlefield come to an end, he has no way
of continuing his self identity and feels emasculated. Death also appears under the guise of blindness. As the play progresses Othello becomes blind
to the truth, so therefore, the truth, as far as Othello knows it, has died. He believes the lies that Iago tells him about Desdemona, Cassio, and others. There is
