lived, the truth was not always highly valued. And, although in most places, the truth was said to set one free, in their lifetimes, writing something heretical could get one
killed. Therefore, wrapped in a fantastical story comes a very profound message about an angel who stands as a symbol of modern alienation. In brief, a man named Pelayo finds
an old man dressed like a beggar, looking very mangy. When he gets the old man home he and his wife, Elisenda notice the wings on him and conclude that
he must be an angel. The neighbor woman states that they should club it to death. Pelayo and his wife do not have the heart to do that, but nonetheless
they shove the angel into the chicken coop. Word gets around that there is a real angel in Pelayos coop and the town starts to come out to take a
peek. Pelayo and his wife treat the angel terribly and begin to charge money for the people to look at the angel. "[T]he cripples pulled out feathers to
touch their defective parts with, and even the most merciful threw stones at him, trying to get him to rise so they could see him standing" (Marquez 443).
The misconception, here, is that because the old man does not look normal that he must not be human and therefore, they can treat
him like an animal. They do this when they "burned his side with an iron for branding steers"(Marquez 443). The theme of alienation is obvious. The angel represents those
