all to read. Of particular interest to the historical scholar is the time that Diaz spent in the service of such men as Cordoba and Cortes. It would be his
work with Cortes that would illustrate how the theme of religion was so firmly entrenched in the culture of the Spanish people and how this belief allowed the explorers to
make the decisions that they made. As such, Diazs book remains as one of the best primary accounts of the conquest of the Aztecs. He speaks of how Montezuma and
Cortes started out on the best of terms. Montezuma tells Cortes that the ancient prophecies foretold his coming and that he would rule over the Aztec people. Diaz has his
doubts about whether Montezuma is telling the whole truth or not. In fact, it is rather obvious that he considers Montezuma to be inferior in many ways. What is painfully
obvious is that in this pivotal encounter there were two individuals who were evenly matched in their devotion to their people and to their religion. Cortes was devout and dedicated
to his purpose, as was Montezuma. However, what seems to happen is a battle, not only of the physical sort, but of ideologies. Cortes replied through Dona Marina that he
would pay for the gift in good works and that we were the vassals of the great prince Don Carlos who had sent us to redress grievances and punish evil
doers, and to put an end to human sacrifices. And he explained to them many things of our holy religion(Diaz 88). It is clear that Diaz views the
customs and bloody rituals of the Aztecs as evil and satanic. And yet, understanding how events unfold as one reads this book, one cannot help but to be stricken by
