a new perspective on what it means to be needy. Indeed, the theme of hunger is a predominant theme and takes many forms throughout the novel. Bastard Out of
Carolina is set in Greenville, South Carolina at the home of the Boatwrights. Ruth Anne, called Bone, by everyone suffers a terrible life. Hunger is a constant enemy and it
constantly gnaws at her from nearly every facet of her life. In the literal sense, Bone is bone-thin. She has suffered malnutrition and envies the other children that she
sees with good parents and food on the table on a consistent basis. On a purely symbolic level, Bone, can be said to be representative of someone being a mere
shell of a human being...all bones. Beaten and raped by one of her many stepfathers, her mother Anney is faced with the decision to choose husband or daughter in
a final confrontation. Building up to this final confrontation are the ever increasing examples of the themes of hunger. Anney, Bones mother, hungers for stability and strength in her life.
She desires it more than anything else and it is what she spends the most of the book searching for. Bone hungers for love. She wants to be wanted,
to be appreciated, to know that someone cares whether she lives or dies. She does not find it with her family, and it can be said, though there are a
few friends, in the end, Bone is left with her own thoughts. She is hungry for the love of a father figure, especially, but is confused about the true meaning
of love because of Daddy Glens sexual abuse. "Yet it was only in my fantasies with people watching me that I was able to defy Daddy Glen. ... In them
