patriarchal society. In other words, men were the dominant force in the culture while women were submissive. Experts who are familiar with this period of time know this
is so, mainly because of the writings and artwork that were products of ancient Greece. Much of these writings and art demonstrated women in submissive roles as housewives and
slaves. Perhaps the most famous writings that came out of aged Greece were the Iliad and the Odyssey, both of which were
written by Greek author Homer. Even to this day, most readers enjoy the improbable journeys and actions of those long-ago characters.
It is true that The Odyssey focuses mainly on the adventures and exploits of men -- Zeus deciding on the fate of Odysseus; Telemachus engaging on a frantic search
for his father; Odysseus himself attempting to brave the seas, not to mention prison, in order to return home and the overall exploits of Menelaus, Telemachuss friend.
However, the women of the Odyssey also play an interesting role in the story -- some analysts might say a pivotal role. Two of
the strongest women in the piece are the goddess Pallas Athena and Penelope, Odysseuss wife. In addition, although her part was small in The Odyssey, the beggar Eurykleia was one
of the ones who recognized Odysseus upon his return as he was disguised as a beggar. Therefore, it could be said that if it werent for the women of
