against one half of the earths population: women. One example of how this war is being waged is the Shariah, which is Islamic law. This law has been recently
applied to a woman living in Nigeria for having relations outside of marriage. Her sentence is death by stoning. "No country that values human dignity and the equality of all
its citizens," states LaShawn Jefferson of the Wall Street Journal, "can afford to have a legal system in place that endorses discrimination, torture, and cruel and inhuman punishment"(Jefferson 2002). It
would seem that Sharia Law covers rules for nearly everything, including personal hygiene, diet, sexual conduct, and even aspects of raising children. The Sharia is not only responsible for the
physical modes of conduct, but also establishes religious and spiritual paths as well. This article by Jefferson goes on to illustrate
some of the heinous ways in which women are relegated to sub-human standards and gross inequities. He speaks of the inhumane way in which a woman is degraded in her
own society for being the victim of a rape. According to the Shariah, if a woman is raped, she must have four witnesses to back up her claim(Jefferson, 2002).
As one may expect, most rapes go unprosecuted. These laws combine with cultural norms, in some countries, to create an atmosphere of total fear among the female population. Jefferson reports
