well-known philosophers shared many ideas and theories in common. Both believed that natural law was the fundamental principle of existence. And both believed that God, or the divine, were responsible for the formation and maintenance of the universe. This paper will briefly discuss the backgrounds of both men (in order to better understand where they obtained their ideas) and then will discuss their views on nature, natural law and God. Thomas Aquinas was born in 1227 near Rome and he died in 1274, also near Rome (Thomas Aquinas, 2002). Although considered a "slow learner" and nicknamed "The Dumb Ox" because of his lumbering personality and gait, during his lifetime, however, his philosophies were incorporated into the doctrine that would help reform the Catholic Church and help turn it into the religious institute it is know for today. Epictetus, in the meantime, was born more than a millennium earlier, in Phrygia, which was, at the time, part of the Roman Empire (Creed, 1999). He died in Epirus (Creed, 1999). Epictetus was a philosopher who suggested that riches and material items be eschewed for the more important needs of the spirit, which were outlined through divine law (Pierce, 2002). The law of nature, Epictetus believed, was that the better should always be superior to the worse (Pierce, 2002). In other words, common sense dictates that there will always be one body that is stronger than anothers, someones thought process will be more effective than anothers and so on (Pierce, 2002).
