Orchard, the character of Lopakhin is generally depicted as wearing eye glasses and other articles of clothing which indicate his rank, title, and philosophy as far as his fellow man
are concerned. In brief, the story revolves around the pride and traditions of a Madame Ranevsky and her daughter, Anya, whose destitute situation force them to make some very
tough decisions regarding their family estate. In short, the entire world in their absence, has gone upside down. Lopahkin who was formerly a peasant in the village is now a
part of the wealthy nobility. It is he who has rescued the family estate from foreclosure. In effect, then, he has purchased the land. Unfortunately, he has other plans for
the land other than farming. In these early scenes the actor portraying Lopakhin can begin with only the gloves and the scarf. Thus, his
head is left unprotected. This can be seen as symbolically remaining open to entertaining ideas that the Ranevsky might suggest. In fact, because of his childhood affiliation with them he
tells them that they can still remain on the land of their ancestors, only that the buildings will be changing. As the Ranevskys continue to protest and to attempt to
save their farm from subdivision additional layers of clothing can be added. The scarf is an indicator of his desire to place a strangle hold on those whom were his
former employers and who looked down on his family. The glasses play a significant role in the character development of Lopakhin, it can be stated. His vision is not
perfect. He cannot see as well as other people. This is symbolic of his inability to see how subdividing the land and building villas will impact the area, the way
