of the worlds greatest playwrights, Shakespeare used this device often. In three of his representative plays, Othello, Hamlet and Macbeth, the use of temptation to heighten the tension, while still
furthering the plot, can be exampled. Othello, as depicted from the outset, is a brilliant leader and generally a good hearted man. Unfortunately, his fatal flaw is that he is
basically insecure and extremely proud. These two factors combine and allow him to fall prey to Iagos insinuations about Desdemona. Almost from the beginning Iagos poison has begun to work.
"I know our countrys disposition well"(Act 3, sc 3, li 204). This sentence by Iago is in response to Othellos denial of
Desdemonas infidelity. Iago tells him that in truth Desdemona is cheating on him. When Othello denies this, he tells Othello that he is a foreigner and does not know the
ways of Venetian women. Of course, Iago is only too ready to educate him. Othello succumbs, then, to the temptation to spy on his wife. Of course, Iago volunteers to
be the spy. This perfectly sets the trap for Othellos fall and the eventual murder of Desdemona. Othello becomes more embroiled in the
possibility that Desdemona is cheating on him, and in domino fashion this suspicion turns to jealousy, hurt, anger, rage, and eventually murder. All of this happens because he gives in
to the temptation of jealousy before finding out the truth. And, in fact, we know that he would never have done so because of his immense pride.
