neighbors and the doctor come and go to ostensibly say their good-byes. Each chapter in the book is named for the visitor and as such each has a particular and
unique perspective when viewing Addie and their experiences with her, and her death. The shift from one character to the next is as much a Faulkner-ism as is the use
of dialect. Many have wondered at his use of the italics during each visitors time at the house, but when examined closely, the function makes sense and further examples the
brilliance of Faulkners talent. After Adie dies, the real action of the novel takes place because they had all promised Addie that they would bury her in Jefferson with her
own family. So, her family loads up the old wagon and set out on their journey. Many obstacles stand in their way, such as injuries, bad choices, the usual family
squabbles, and mental instability. The journey illuminates the structure of the family and Addies place in it. The reader is given a voyeuristic glimpse at the dirty laundry of this
family and is lead to draw their own conclusions about family, life, and love. Having quickly summarized his novel, As I Lay Dying, one can begin to peer at the
cohesive literary glue that holds it all together. One of the ingredients of that glue is the use of language. His particular use of colloquialisms is such an important element
because without having to waste words on the matter, he is able to show that the family is poor, uneducated, and at times, crass and crude. For those not used
