norm as one examines the life and times of several couples. The way in which each individual constructs the world around them is of particular interest as it says so
much about the character as much as do the imagery and the use of irony. A brief summary of the book shows an ambitious mother seeking to make worthy matches
for her unmarried daughters in a town just outside of London. With the arrival of a Mr. Bingley to the town(who just happens to be eligible and rich) the mother
believes that she has been given a remarkable opportunity to marry at least one of her daughters off. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession
of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife"(Austen, 1). And so the tone of the novel is set. Elizabeths sister, Jane, becomes ill when she is forced
to walk home in the rain. They take her back to the estate to recover where her sister Elizabeth will come to assist her in her recovery. Elizabeth frequently spends
time with Mr. Darcy, whom has become very interested in her. She, however, seems oblivious to his ultimate intentions and cant see him for anything but the man she judged
him to be when she first met him at the ball: a rude egocentric boor. And yet, one of the Bingley sisters illuminates what society expects from a woman:
