argument over the benefits of fluoride on teeth has waged among many dental professionals. Fluoride, both a naturally occurring and manufactured
mineral, has had a good-side, bad-side scenario. On the one hand, many in the dental profession point out that fluoride tends to retard the growth of caries (cavities) in teeth
by strengthening tooth enamel. But those on the other side of the argument point out that too much fluoride (both in the water and in the dentists office) can end
up causing problems for teeth, turning them yellow, allowing them to decay and also creating other problems. There are few in this argument who adapt the "happy medium" approach, namely
that fluoride, likely when used in moderation, can be beneficial. But what about when fluoride is used as a compound on sensitive
teeth? Can the mineral, when applied directly to the teeth, actually serve as a desensitizing agent? Though this is a valid question
there are, surprisingly, not a whole lot of studies done on this particular issue - and some of the information that is actually out there in this regard is more
anecdotal than scientific. But there are reasons why, if used in moderation, some types of fluoride pastes, gels and varnishes could actually help desensitize teeth that tend to hurt. In
this paper, well attempt to ferret out some of the research that has been performed on this issue. While the student has
