led a group of officers who were all termed, the untouchables because of their inability to be corrupted. In particular, their arch nemesis was none other than Chicago gangster, Al Capone. Movies, television series, at least two of each variety, were made about this classic struggle between good and evil. In the end, however, what most remember about Ness and the Untouchables is what they remember from the movies or the television series, which bears little resemblance to the truth anymore. It is questionable whether such movies, designed with entertainment in mind, as educational tools in the classroom. The DePalma version of The Untouchables, which is the most recent version, though closer to the truth, still strays in oh, so many Hollywood ways. The end game, and the solemn truth, was that Capone went away to jail. Ness, however, did not put him there. In the latest film version it is made to seem that Ness has been the one who finally triumphed over the evil of Capone, but in reality it was the IRS agents, who to this day remain nameless, who put together enough evidence to put the famous crime boss in jail for life. The time was a curious combination of wealth and prosperity for many, which also gave rise to greater criminal activity. Coupled with the decree of prohibition on alcohol, many took advantage of this easy money. However, and in fact, nearly every facet of business in America was corrupt at the time. The good old boy network was ruling most of the country with an iron fist. It was just the way things were done, or so most accepted.
