tale is a good one, a classic, one that has earned the honor of having a very long life in the hearts and history of mankind. One can see this
repeated in the continued use and reuse of the plotline. A good example of this are the countless remakes of the Romeo and Juliet tale, as typified by West Side
Story. Thus, it can be assumed that it is the universal themes that allow this tale of doomed lovers to transverse time, place and culture. Even if one is not
a fan of Shakespeare one is familiar with the names of Romeo and Juliet. Their ill-fated love is the stuff that still makes the staunchest hearts grow soft. The tale
has survived the centuries, one has to think, because its messages still hold true to the emotions and situations which mankind still continue to face. Most believe that Shakespeare created
the story of Romeo and Juliet, but most experts state that the tale of the star-crossed lovers was told by minstrels in the streets long before Shakespeares time. Still, one
has to credit the famous bard for organizing the tale in to a form that has lasted and continue to inspire throughout the ages. One of the earlier themes is
that of the extreme power of love to cloud the mind and take over ones actions(Boardwell 65, see also Garebian 25). This is particularly so in the case of Romeo
