documentary was a little on the dramatic side, he did point out a couple of problems. First, Americans dont eat very healthily. Second, Americans are obese. Obesity does more than
take away looks and stamina; it can cause serious health issues and impact the entire economy as well. In this paper, well examine some of those costs, and some of
the issue that come about, based on obesity. What, exactly, is obesity? Many people think that obesity and fat mean the same
things, but they are defined as different by the Center for Disease Control. While being overweight refers to an excess body weight compared to certain standards (such as insurance charts),
obesity is connected to having an abnormally high proportion of body fat to weight (Weight Control Information). The body-mass index, or BMI, is used to determine what a persons body
mass is (Weight Control Information). A body mass of 25 or higher is considered moderately obese to severely obese (Weight Control Information).
The chart below from the Obesity Society shows the percentage of the U.S. population that is obese. Colorado had the least percentage of obese people, whereas more than 30%
of the population in Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi are obese (Obesity in U.S. Adults, 2007). However, the government
of Louisiana was concerned enough to write extensively about obesity on a website entitled "Stay Healthy! Louisiana." In this article, it showed that the percentage of overweight/obese adults in Louisiana
