helping. Additionally, the United States offers disaster relief around the world when a natural disaster strikes, such as an earthquake or a
huge storm. There are private charities throughout the U.S. that send money and goods - and more often than not, religious groups and businesses will get together to set up
some kind of fund or collection drive to help the beleaguered area. There are also "official" agencies as well that assist other
countries in times of crisis. The purpose of this paper is to examine what these agencies are and what they do. This list is not necessarily all-inclusive; but these are
the major groups that are dedicated to assisting countries when it comes to trouble. The American Red Cross Founded by nurse Clara
Barton close to a century ago, the Red Cross today is evident with its simple logo - a red cross on a white background. To many people around the world
who have lost home and family to a natural disaster, the Red Cross provides relief and hope. The American Red Cross is
not a governmental agency, yet it received the authority to provide disaster relief when, in 1905, the U.S. Congress was charged by Congress to help both nationally and internationally to
help stem the suffering of "pestilence, famine, fire, floods and other great national calamities" as well as to try to prevent reoccurrence of said calamities (Red Cross, 2004).
