The main discussion concerning the trailing company of the Big Three U.S. automakers is whether the U.S. government should step in to save the company. Though the automakers had already
received $13.4 billion in bailout money in December 2008, the automakers indicated by February 2009 that it wasnt enough. Though Ford Motor Co. was in okay shape, General Motors Corp.
was a mess, prompting the Obama Administrations forcing out of then CEO Rick Waggoner. With Chrysler, the administration was somewhat more lenient, telling the company it had 30 days to
structure a merger with Fiat, or else declare bankruptcy. Chrysler did both, declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Federal Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of New York in Manhattan
on the last day of April 2009 (Kouwe, 2009). Its hoped that Chrysler will emerge from reorganization in better shape, operating without heavy union pension and healthcare obligations, and better
able to focus on getting the best product on the market it can. The more recent saga of Chrysler has split experts,
pundits and others down the middle, with those on one side saying that a Chapter 11 reorganization is the best possible thing that could have happened to the company and,
in fact, its what should have happened in the 1980s when Chrysler asked for its first government bailout. But those on the other side suggest that a Chapter 11 will
now mean a shedding of many workers and closure of many dealerships, leaving a lot of people out of a job, with no hope of finding one in the current
