society at large was whether or not the United States should become involved. In 1917, U.S. forces were dragged reluctantly into Europe to retaliate for the sinking of the Lusitania.
And in 1940, the U.S. found itself once again fighting because of another attack - an attack on the army base at Pearl Harbor. In fact, isolationism has been pretty
much the stock of most presidential administrations as far back as George Washingtons (Bonta 21). Yet more than 60 years after that
attack, we find ourselves no longer the isolationistic nation we once were. Instead of waiting to be invited in to help defend a country, were all too eager to send
our military overseas to various nations to bomb and cajole into submission, and to prove who the new superpower (and the only one these days) is. In short, the U.S.
has ended up becoming the global police of the world. Whenever and wherever trouble strikes in the forms of revolution or civil war, the U.S. is there with its military
might and superior weapons technology to help bail out the stricken country. The problem is, this role as global police force is
probably not in the best interest of the U.S. For one thing, when military personnel are away, thats less personnel at home, defending the interest of the homeland. While once,
in more na?ve times, this wouldnt have been a problem, following 9/11, this is a concern on everyones mind. If terrorists attack again, will our forces be strong enough to
resist? Or will they be so spread out around the world that the U.S. wont be able to adequately defend itself? With a volunteer draft in place (rather than a
