as a comparison. Supporters of the health care system north of the border praised the fact that everyone had access to health care, regardless of income or socio-economic distinction. Those
opposing it pointed out that sure, everyone had access to health care, so long as they were willing to wait weeks to access it (even in emergencies).
Rather than spreading myths about Canadas system (and that of the United States), the better way to go is to compare the two of them objectively.
More than 10 years ago, Szick et al put together a comparison between the health care systems of the U.S. and Canada, and
it still remains a definitive, objective comparison today. The report put together by these clinical researchers points out, first and foremost, that the main difference between the two systems is
that the Canadian system is publicly financed, whereas the one in the U.S. is funded through a private system, meaning more players involved and more competition. What Szick et al
did not focus on, however, was that the U.S. system is mainly a profit-taking system, with private players involved in boosting revenue, whereas the Canadian system is not. The researchers
came to the conclusion (interestingly enough) that healthcare outcomes didnt differ based on the public vs. private option. The researchers were also not able to come to a definitive agreement
about the quality of care received in the Canadian versus U.S. systems (Szick et al, 1999). Some years later, when Guyatt et al (2007) conducted a similar research, it was
found that while the U.S. paid more per patient than Canada, outcomes were still inconsistent though in some areas, Canadian patients fared better. What we know so far is that
