hand, ozone is good, as it protects us from skin cancer. On the other hand, ozone is bad, as it creates poisonous air. Were told that driving cars ups the ozone level on smoggy days. Then were told that our refrigeration and air conditioning coolant is also responsible. What, exactly, is the truth about ozone? In its very basic sense, the word ozone comes from the Greek term "ozein," meaning "to smell" (Finberg, 2002). It is a light-blue gas with a strong odor (Finberg, 2002). For our purposes, ozone is actually two components. In the outer reaches of our atmosphere, ozone is a layer that scientists believe protect earth from the suns dangerous ultraviolet rays, while providing us with the heat and light we need (Finberg, 2002). Up there, near outer space, ozone is formed through the action of sunlight and oxygen (Finberg, 2002). In some cases, ozone depletion occurs naturally -however, on the atmospheric level, the concern is with ozone depletion, which is happening, in part, due to greenhouse gasses known as chlorofluorocarbons (that cooling stuff in the refrigerators and air conditioners) (Finberg, 2002, see also Anonymous, 2002). While scientists first noticed the growing "hole" in the ozone layer during the mid-1970s, as recently as the late 1990s, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the zone of ozone destruction over the south pole has increased (Finberg, 2002). The difficult with CFCs is that they were not returned to earth via rain or destroyed when interacting with other chemicals (Anonymous, 2002). CFCs, instead, are long-lived chemicals that can remain in the atmosphere for anywhere from 20 to 120 years (Anonymous, 2002). When ...
