never go home again". Meaning, that when the soldiers returned, they came home to an economy and society that had started to change. The 1950s and 1960s then signaled a
time of change in both the social and economic factors in America. These shifts are still impacting America today. When most servicemen returned from the war they began to pick
up where they left off with their lives and started new families. American industry, which had benefited greatly from the war effort, continued to expand to meet the peace time
needs. Americans had more disposable income during this time and began to buy products which had not been available during wartime. This served to expand industry even further, creating even
more demand for factory workers. Growth was the name for the early part of the fifties. Babies were born (the baby boom), jobs were created, and industries popped up overnight.
New technologies, such as the availability of automobiles and television, increased capabilities of publishing houses, such as magazines and newspapers, allowed for an all out mass marketing of goods
and services. This continued to feed in to the mass media marketing and consumption of products by households. Most reports state that the United States has since to reach the
unparalleled heights on the DOW as it did back then. There was also a perceptible shift from the production of goods toward the service industry. Services such as transportation, communication,
entertainment, tourism, as well as accounting, advertising, and insurances were but a few of the service industries that realized significant gains. Socially, this time was still a hotbed of unrest.
