manages to examine certain universal truths inherent to everyone. In his book, The Third Wedding, for example, he examples the role of women, the harsh life the lower Grecian classes
lived, and the inevitable triumph of the human spirit. The main protagonists of The Third Wedding are Nina and Hecuba. Both women are an unusual mix of guile and
pride. It is soon evident that the characteristics which might seem abrasive to most, outside of Greece, were a matter of survival in their community and home life. In many
cases they must resort to underhanded practices, or starve. They learn, as does the reader, that the justice system does not apply to them and that if they are to
survive, they must become almost animal-like in their instincts. The role of love in this novel is shown to be confusing. The attempts at true love by Nina are
thwarted and so, she ends up marrying someone that she detests, for the most part. She feels as if she has been forced to live a life that is not
her own. Nina soon learns of her husbands homosexual tendencies when she happens upon her husband and her brother having sex one morning. This calls into question her view of
men and of the meaning of love all together. She screams to herself, "will any kind of hole satisfy these beasts?"(Taktsis 1986). The prevailing role that women were expected
to play in modern Greek society was secondary to the role of males in the community. Women were to be seen and not heard, to be beaten when necessary. In
fact, Hecuba reinforces this idea when the reader finds out that, "Hecuba insisted that the only reason her father married her mother was because of her wide hips"(Taktsis 1986, pg.
