topsy-turvy. Set in post-World War II Vienna, Austria, this film noir work definitely demonstrates that, to coin a phrase, up is down and down is up. It is probably not
surprising - a city in the aftermath of a brutal war such as World War II would be a land of confusion. Given the location, given the story line, and
given the time during which the film takes place (after the horror and evil of Hitlers second World War), "The Third Man" makes it difficult for the audience to find
a distinguishing line between good and evil. In post-war Vienna, in the life of Holly Martins who visits that sad and desperate city, good is evil and evil, it seems,
can be conceived as good. The only dividing lines in post-war Vienna, in fact, seem to be physical - in post-war Vienna,
there are French, American, British and Russian zones - and neutral zones as well (Ebert, 2002). Into this divisive, crumbled city walks Holly Martins, an alcoholic and author of pulp
Westerns (Ebert, 2002). The only reason he is in Vienna is because his college friend, Harry Lime, has invited him to visit the city (Ebert, 2002). Harry has offered Holly
a job writing for a volunteer medical unit he runs. Harry, however, is dead by the time Holly arrives (Ebert, 2002); he has, in fact, been killed just the week
before, and his coffin removed just minutes before Hollys arrival. Although Holly is told that Harry was an evil man, by none
