to be fairly quick. But when we get there, we see a long line, with two clerks. As we stand in line, waiting for help, were silently fuming. Why doesnt
the post office hire more help, we wonder. Nor do we experience this with post offices - grocery stores, traffic and the department of motor vehicles are all infamous for
delays. There are several mathematical models, known as waiting in line models, or queuing theories, that can help in this regard. But
as well see, queuing theory doesnt necessarily work all the time. Definition In its most basic form, queuing theory is
a mathematical study of waiting in lines (Kolobe). Kolobe points out that with this theory comes several related processes that can include arriving at the back of the line, waiting
in line and being served at the front of the line (Kolobe). Queuing theory isnt new; people have always been frustrated
by waiting in line. But the scientific research on queuing began when Danish engineer A.K. Erlang in 1989 published a report about fluctuating demands in telephone traffic, then followed that
report up with one eight years later detailing delays in automatic dialing equipment (Queuing Theory, 2009). Later on, after World War II, Erlangs studies were applied to business applications and
other general problems (Queuing Theory, 2009). When things (such as people or cars) are queued up, it can cause problems with
areas of distribution, and this theory attempts to study how systems with limited resources can distribute those resources to elements online, and how those elements waiting responds (Queuing Theory). Weve
