theories have been used extensively in the social sciences, and both offer their positives and negatives. Rational choice theory, or RTC, is
the belief that all people behave in a rational manner when making decisions (Scott, 2001). Before making various decisions, people will calculate the costs and benefits of their actions before
actually taking action on something (Scott, 2001). The theory is that human beings are willing and able to take responsibilities for their own actions and that they, alone, will make
the best decision for themselves that yields the greatest satisfaction (Scott, 2001). When a woman cooks dinner for her family (consisting of
a husband, a son and a daughter), she applies the basic form of RTC toward her actions of what to cook and when to serve it. If she works herself,
she may decide she wants something thats simple to make, or perhaps, she may decide to pick up fast food. However, if she picks up fast food, there is the
danger that it would impact negatively her husband, who suffers from high cholesterol. Making something simple would be a possibility, perhaps spaghetti. But her son doesnt like spaghetti, and that
would entail having to heat up something else for him. Perhaps, the mother thinks, she could make spaghetti for her family, find some kind of nutritious frozen dinner for her
son, and heat that up. By making these conscious choices, notes the theory of RTC, the woman has analyzed all the actions she can take, has figured out the consequences
and, based on all the information she has, has made the best decision she can for herself. What RTC does not take
