to be that of hope, but in the end, the real message that comes through is that of despair. Life of Fitzgerald He was brash and bold to the
public, caring and sensitive behind closed doors. And somewhere in the middle of those dichotomies was where such novels as This Side of Paradise, and The Great Gatsby, among others,
were penned. Eyes that danced with secret humor, he would have said that there were damn few influences on him, but the ones that there were, were enough. He of
course was referencing some of those things about which he was most passionate: books, booze and Zelda. If one studies even a small
account of Fitzs life, then it is not difficult to see why these themes would evidence themselves in his works. In his life it seems that every time things are
looking secure for him, Fate steps in to pull the rug out from under his feet. As a young man, for example, he wanted to marry a girl from a
family that was better off than his own. In order to make something of himself he began to write articles for various magazines. He had some moderate success with that,
but with the creation of This Side of Paradise, his success was instantaneous and he was able to wed Zelda. Zelda was not the classic shrinking violet of the
era. Rather she wrote under her own name, and many have suggested that she may have had more than a supportive role in many of Fitzs works. They spent many
