of poetry. Many have labeled Frost a nature poet but, if one looks closely one begins to see that Frost is not trying to explain how nature works, he is
using the imagery to describe the inner landscape of the human soul(Wakefield). This is especially true of his poem, The Telephone. Why does a Robert
Frost poem read differently than any other poem? One of the earliest and easiest answers to this question is that Frost uses rhythm and meter in a way that is
very conversational, almost like prose or blank verse as opposed to other poets. In his poem, The Telephone, the clear rhythm is used for several reasons, as are his use
of metaphor, irony, and symbolism. When I was just as far as I could walk From here today,
There was an hour All still When leaning with my head against a flower
I heard you talk(Frost 46). In this early passage the student may be deceived by thinking that the narrator is leaning
against an actual flower. However, if one will recall, during this time in history in which Frost wrote, the phone had just been invented. The old hand held units looked
very much like tall Iris flowers on long spindly stalks. What he is describing in this passage is a telephone. The word flower then, is a metaphor for the telephone.
