it is for the white collared worker, Miller seems to say in his classic play, Death of a Salesman. Millers portrayal of the American Dream turned nightmare examples how American
society has become very dysfunctional. As such, then, Willy Lomans family serves as the symbolic illustration of this dysfunctional society in miniature. Death of a Salesman is the story of
Willy Loman, who over the span of a day comes face-to-face with the realization that the American Dream has become a nightmare of his own making, that the goals he
has been pursuing for a lifetime have been the wrong ones(Death of a Salesman). This pursuit of the wrong goals has adversely affected his sense of self, sense of worth,
and sense of reality. In a final confrontation with his son, Biff, he becomes acutely aware that his true treasure has always lain with his family, and in one last
noble effort to continue to take care of them, commits suicide(McIlroy 63). Unfortunately, this only reinforces the idea that Willy has sacrificed himself for the American Dream once again.
As each society is comprised of various segments and groups of people, so, too, is the Loman family segmented. Biff represents those who become aware of the wrong pursuits and
finally come to terms with the reality of the situation. Happy, of course, is a chip off the old block, confined into his narrow and rehearsed view of reality. Linda,
and the other women in the play, represent people who are marginalized and oppressed. Her voice is the voice of reason that has been drummed out and tuned out for
