on a daily, even hourly, basis in one of the wealthiest nations in the world. Edwin S. Shneidmans book, The Suicidal Mind, attempts to give insight into the mindset of
the person who contemplates and/or attempts suicide. One of the largest questions that the family members have after someone they know and love has committed suicide is Why?. Often
the best way to gain understanding is to speak with someone who has attempted suicide and lived to tell the tale. Shneidman offers this to the reader. His book places
the reader in the patients mind and allows the reader to look through their eyes for a span of time so that one begins to understand how someone with their
particular views could be compelled to attempt the act of ultimate self destruction. Ariel Wilson approached the author when he was conducting a seminar on how to prevent suicide. Wilsons
story is sobering and emotionally challenging to read. She desperately wanted Dr. Shneidman to hear her story. In appearance, this woman who was only twenty two years old, hid as
much of her body as was possible. This was because she was literally covered with scars where she had been cutting and burning herself. She begged for him to hear
her story. He agreed and sent her some tapes and a tape recorder. In a sad conclusion to Ariels story, Dr. Shneidman called Ariel to see if she were
still interested in being part of the case study, only to find that she had successfully attempted suicide. A day or so later he received her tapes in the mail.
As he listens to the tapes and offers selections for the reader to see it becomes apparent that this woman was in agony of spirit and mind. Through the
