- 1963), The Road Not Taken This quote from one of Robert Frosts most loved poems also summarizes, one can state, the poets fondness for diverging from the long
held traditional forms and structures of his contemporaries. Or, if he did use the old structures, then he does so in a way that often is so disguised that the
reader is not aware of them. So, the question becomes, then: Why does a Robert Frost poem read differently than any other poem? and What elements combine to
create this poets unique voice? One of the earliest and easiest answers to this question is that Frost uses rhythm and meter in a way that is very conversational, almost
like prose or blank verse as opposed to the typical poem. In his poem, Stopping By Woods, the clear rhythm is used for several reasons. Firstly, it imitates the feeling
of forward motion such as might be felt while riding in a sleigh behind a horse. The steady predictable rhythm of the horse hooves can be heard in the steady
predicable rhyme and rhythm. Whose woods these are I think I know. His house
is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods
fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse
near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.
